Meditation Articles Archives

Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, because historically people have known the benefits of yoga. It is important, however, to remember that there are more than 10 different styles of yoga that are most most popular, and each style has its own identity with respect to the benefits you might expect to see from their practice. I have created numerous articles describing yoga for beginners which you can search for to explain these differences, but this article is written to expound on what yoga can do for you. No matter if your focus is physical, mental or both, practicing yoga can benefit you enomrously in many ways. Let’s start with the mental side first.

“Yoga means togetherness of awareness and body. It is a practical science aiming at the realization of the ultimate ? moksha. My purpose is to remove the misconception that yoga is for the elderly and the sick. The practice of yoga should ideally be commenced in early childhood when the body is by nature loose and flexible. Beginning early brings truth to the old adage “prevention is better than cure”. Though yoga does help in treatment of diseases, this is not its only goal.

Ancient masters like Patanjali have made mankind aware of the fact that Yoga is a science which is practical and usable with guaranteed scope of growth at all levels of human existence ? physical, mental, emotional, physiological and spiritual. Its sole principle is to progress from a state of doing to the state of non-doing.

The ancient art of yoga says that an empty mind is God’s workshop. With the passage of time, medical science has made tremendous progress. So have metaphysics, physics, chemistry, human physiology and sports medicine. Yoga, which is a practical science, however, has fallen into the hands of those who don’t really understand its depth and use it for superficial purposes such as figure correction, weight loss and stress management.

Concentration Improvements: This one’s difficult to prove factually, but concentration improvements have been constantly enjoyed by most practitioners. I have personally experienced these improvements!

Increase in Feeling of Well-being: This is the result of the improved mind-body connection and calmness, due to improved concentration, the reduction of hormones associated with stress and an inward focus.

Depression Reduction: This is the result of a number of biochemical reactions, including oxygen level increases in the brain, as well as the release of the associated “negative” energy.
Hostility Decreases: This is the result of the increased level of relaxation and control you learn through practicing yoga.

Physical Benefits of Yoga

Increased Range of Motion: The sequence of yoga poses gently stretches your muscles, ligaments, and tendons over time.

Detoxification: This stretching also massages your organs, and ensures blood flow is optimized. This helps to release toxins.

Muscle tone: Often positions are held for a while causing the aforementioned stretching, but at the same time muscles are worked and strengthened as well.

Lower Blood Pressure: This stretching and massaging provided by yoga also serves to lower your blood pressure, by increasing blood oxygenation and improving circulation.

Cardiovascular Efficiency Increases: The combination of reduced blood pressure and increased oxygen levels raises your level of endurance.

Real Life Benefits of Yoga

Lower Risk of Injury: Due to your new found improved range of motion, strength and improved blood flow, your body will be better protected from future injuries and able to heal quicker.
Improved Coordination: Due to your improved mind-body connection and range of motion you will become more graceful.

Reaction time: This is a result of better circulation and the better mind-body connection.
Endurance: Improved blood flow and oxygenation lead to better cardiovascular health and improved endurance. This is one of the many reasons endurance athletes like runners include yoga as a part of their training.

Some Famous Prayers

Prayer is simply communication with God through written or spoken words, thoughts, meditation, or song. The three keys to prayer are to be personal, with purpose, and persistent. Here are some famous ones. The weather prayer was made famous by General Patton requesting the aid of God to advance the allies towards victory during World War two. Almighty and most merciful Father, we humbly beseech Thee, of Thy great goodness, to restrain these immoderate rains with which we have had to contend. Grant us fair weather for Battle. Graciously hearken to us as soldiers who call upon Thee that, armed with Thy power, we may advance from victory to victory, and crush the oppression and wickedness of our enemies and establish Thy justice among men and nations. The prayer of Jabez was a best selling book and inspiration to many. And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested. 1 Chronicles 4:10 The Lord’s model prayer found in Matthew 6:9-13. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. Asa’s prayer for help against the million man army of Ethiopia. And Asa cried unto the Lord his God, and said, Lord, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O Lord our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude.

O Lord, thou art our God; let no man prevail against thee. So the Lord smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled. 2 Chronicles 14:11-12 The prayer made by their king that saved Israel from three invading armies. And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, before the new court, And said, O Lord God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee? Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever? And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying, If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt hear and help. And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not; Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit. O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee. 2 Chronicles 20:5-12 Francis Assisi was a Deacon and founder of a Friars (similar to monks) order. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned. It is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Reprinted from a prayer book used by George Washington. A Morning Prayer. Almighty God, and most merciful father, who didst command the children of Israel to offer daily sacrifice to thee, that thereby they might glorify and praise thee for thy protection both night and day; receive , O Lord, my morning sacrifice which I now offer up to thee; I yield thee humble and hearty thanks that thou has preserved me from the dangers of the night past, and brought me to the light of this day, and the comforts thereof, a day which is consecrated to thine own service and for thine own honor. Let my heart, therefore, Gracious God, be so affected with the glory and majesty of it, that I may not do mine own works, but wait on thee, and discharge those weighty duties thou requirest of me; and since thou art a God of pure eyes, and wilt be sanctified in all who draw near unto thee, who doest not regard the sacrifice of fools, nor hear sinners who tread in the courts, pardon, I beseech thee, my sins, remove them from thy presence, as far as the east is from the west, and accept of me for the merits of thy son Jesus Christ, that when I come into thy temple, and compass thine alter, my prayers may come before thee as incense; and as thou wouldst hear me calling upon thee in my prayers, so give me grace to hear thee calling on me in thy word, that it may be wisdom, righteousness, reconciliation and peace to the saving of my soul in the day of the Lord Jesus. Grant that I may hear it with reverence, receive it with meekness, mingle it with faith, and that it may accomplish in me, gracious God, the good work for which thou has sent it. Bless my family, kindred, friends and country, be our God and guide this day and for ever for his sake, who lay down in the Grave and arose again for us, Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

A prayer based on Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Lord Jesus Christ, my God, You have said, “Apart from me You can do nothing.” In faith I embrace Your words, Lord, and I entreat Your goodness. Help me to carry out the work I am about to begin, and to bring it to completion. To You I give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. Almighty God, our Help and Refuge, who knows that we can do nothing right without Your guidance and help; direct me by Your wisdom and power, that I may accomplish this task and, whatever I do according to Your divine will, so that it may be beneficial to me and others and to the glory of Your holy Name. Amen. My Lord and Savior, You became man and labored with Your hands until the time of Your ministry. Bless me as I begin this work. Help me to bring it to completion. Lord, enlighten my mind and strengthen my body, that I may accomplish my task according to Your will. Guide me to bring about works of goodness to Your service and glory. Amen. The Serenity Prayer for peace of heart and mind. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen.

How To Stop Thinking Without Falling Asleep

Make no mistake, the stressors of everyday life are overwhelming for everyone. Because we need to relieve these stressors to be everything we can be, it is important to turn to resources to help us achieve what we cannot do alone. Conventional medicine is not the answer; rather, the ability to go within for peace of mind is the preferred method on the road to mindfulness and inner healing. Meditation is the “quiet answer.”

Don’t be confused by the jargon of meditation from the ’60s. Meditation is merely going within, but this is a practice that none of us can accomplish without direction and help. Today’s world moves too fast and we are products of a society which ignores the practice of “quiet time” to go within.

With meditation, the things that we view do not change; it is our mind that changes ?and, when our mind changes, we can see fullness and connectedness, as well as individuality and separateness, in all things we view. Healing comes from within and is often a product of attitudinal and emotional transformation, accompanied by major reduction in physical symptoms and improvement in our physical condition.

Meditation is, quite simply, conscious relaxation. We start by paying attention to our breathing. Counting our breaths from one to ten, while clearing our mind of all other “clutter,” enables each of us to manage the daily concerns that crowd our lives. Everyone deserves this kind of personal attention! Through meditation, we are empowered to be capable of having the life we love. The world is simply a better place when we practice meditation. Through meditation, we come to “live on purpose.”

My personal favorite is a program developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, Professor of Medicine emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. This amazing approach rescues us from the damage of stress. In “Full Catastrophe Living,” Dr. Kabat-Zinn has created a practical guide to mindfulness meditation and healing. He explains the power of paying attention and increasing awareness.

The title is adopted from “Zorba the Greek” in which Anthony Quinn’s title character proclaims he has experienced “the full catastrophe” of the ups and downs of family life. In “Full Catastrophe Living,” Dr. Kabat-Zinn reminds us of Zorba’s philosophy that all things are extraordinary, even miraculous.

This program was developed to help people cope with chronic pain, both post-surgical and traumatic, for which there is no medicinal relief. In his stress clinic, Dr. Kabat-Zinn’s clients often have sudden and dramatic experiences during meditation that lead them to new ways of seeing the stressors ? and pain sources ? in their lives. Out of this shift of perspective comes an ability to acutely deal with our issues with greater balance and inner security.

Included are tapes which provide guidance for a body scan that allows us to separate from our physical selves and relate to the more spiritual essence which we all share. Laying still and concentrating on relaxing our entire body – and staying awake in the process – allows us to see both ourselves and our problems from a perspective of wholeness. This practice enables us to change our perspective from feeling out of control to a sense of acceptance and inner peace and control.

Another favorite is “8 Minute Meditation: Quiet Your Mind, Change Your Life,” by Victor Davich. Offering a simple no-nonsense approach to help reduce stress and experience increased focus, this program teaches the basic principles of meditation on a simplified basis for the beginner.

Davich has practiced meditation for more than 25 years and has studied with some of the finest teachers, bringing the full spectrum of his knowledge in this work for those of us who may have been swayed by the many myths surrounding meditation.

For those who wish to manifest change in our lives, I highly recommend “Meditations for Manfesting: Morning and Evening Meditations to Literally Create Your Heart’s Desire” by Dr. Wayne Dyer. This is a program I have begun using with incredible results. This audio CD, complete with background music and guided meditation by Dr. Dyer, propels the meditation without overwhelming the primary focus of the breathing and necessary affirmations for bringing about positive results in our lives.

Dr. Dyer is a true “renaissance man” and has created a medium for all of us to change our lives through the power of meditation and focus. You must be prepared to suspend all your disbeliefs and be assured that whatever you are manifesting will come into your life. Be careful, though! Use this with caution and prepare to be amazed. The Universe responds and gives us what we tell it to. Once your intention is clear, things that you meditate upon will come into your life instantly. Change the way you think and you change your life!

You can find all these programs and more at http://supermall2009.blogspot.com.

May you always enjoy peace of mind!
