Meditation can be a gift that you give yourself. In today’s world, stress seems to be the norm and relaxation is often something we have to plan for instead of take for granted. Learning the art of meditation can help you to give yourself a refreshing vacation from the stresses of everyday life. You can improve your mental clarity and physical vitality, and develop a calm, centered strength that can become a part of the foundation of your life.

Learning to relax through meditation does not have to be very involved. There are basic guidelines to follow, of course, but it is mostly about motivation and practice. You need to set up a quiet environment where you can practice your meditation. That isn’t always easy; sometimes you need to be assertive about telling others that you need time where you can’t be disturbed. Once you find the time and the place to do your meditation, you have to get into the habit of actively relaxing. Though that seems like a contradiction in terms, it helps to have some perspective about what you have been doing up until now. If you are like a lot of other people, you have probably perfected the stress habit. In order to unlearn this negative habit you need to, at first, actively practice relaxing.

Find a quiet place to practice relaxing and meditating. You can sit up or lay down; just make sure that you are completely comfortable. You may prefer it to be completely quiet or you may prefer listening to soft music. If you prefer the music, make sure it is only instrumental and that you find it soothing. Close your eyes and take deep, cleansing breaths. Visualize settings where you would feel completely relaxed, such as leaning against a tree and fishing on a warm spring day, lying on the beach listening to the waves, or floating on a mattress in a pool. Concentrate on relaxing each part of your body in turn.

Your mind will wander, and that’s perfectly normal. Once you feel very relaxed, let your mind do what it will. Often you will feel like your mind is racing at first, but this is usually just its way of ridding itself of stress. Over time you’ll find that your mind races less and focuses more on important, positive things. Your conscious mind will feel more in touch with your subconscious mind, and in turn this will help you to feel more peaceful. The more often you practice this meditation, the more it will carry over into all other aspects of your life. You will feel a very positive difference, which will motivate you to keep on with the meditation habit.
